Spring in the Pacific Northwest: Why April & May Are the Best Time

Spring in the Pacific Northwest: Why April & May Are the Best Time for an Extended Stay in Seattle or Bellevue

April and May bring something rare to Seattle and Bellevue: warmth, color, and a city that finally exhales. If you're planning an extended stay — for work, relocation, or a slower kind of travel — this is the season to do it.

There's a reason Pacific Northwest locals have a word for the feeling when the clouds finally break in spring: it's not just relief — it's revelation. After months of grey mornings and persistent drizzle, April arrives and the region transforms. Cherry trees along the University of Washington's quad burst into bloom. The Olympic Mountains emerge sharp and snow-capped against an improbably blue sky. And Seattle and Bellevue — two of the country's most livable cities — show you exactly why people choose to build their lives here.

If you're considering an extended stay in the area — whether you're on a multi-week work engagement, in the middle of a relocation, or simply working remotely and want a real base — spring is the ideal time to arrive. Here's why.

The Weather Finally Cooperates

Seattle's reputation for rain is both earned and overstated. What the city actually experiences is a mild, overcast winter — and a genuinely spectacular spring and summer. By mid-April, average highs sit in the low-to-mid 60s°F. Rainfall tapers off noticeably. Days stretch long, with golden light lingering past 8pm by late May.

For extended-stay guests, this matters more than it might seem. When you're spending weeks rather than days in a city, the quality of light, the walkability, the ease of being outdoors — these become part of your daily life. Spring in Bellevue means lunch walks around Bellevue Downtown Park without an umbrella. It means Saturday mornings at the Bellevue Farmers Market without rushing back inside.

"When you're here for a month, the city becomes yours — and spring is when Seattle and Bellevue are most themselves."

Spring Events Worth Staying For

April and May pack an unusual amount of activity into both cities. A few highlights worth knowing about:

  • 🌸  UW Cherry Blossoms

The Quad at University of Washington typically peaks in late March–early April. One of the most photographed scenes in the Pacific Northwest — and easily accessible from any Sophari property.

  • 🎨  Seattle Art Fair

Draws galleries and collectors from across the country. Usually held late spring at the Lumen Field Event Center.

  • 🥾  Trail Season Opens

Snow clears from lower-elevation trails in the Cascades through April, opening up excellent day hikes within 45 minutes of Bellevue.

  • ⚾  Mariners Home Opener

Baseball returns to T-Mobile Park in early April. An easy evening trip from either Bellevue or West Seattle.

It's Smart Timing for Corporate Travelers

Spring is one of the busiest hiring and project seasons in the tech corridor between Bellevue and Seattle. Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google, and dozens of mid-size tech companies regularly ramp up teams in Q1 and Q2 — which means consulting engagements, onboarding cohorts, and cross-functional projects that bring people to the area for weeks or months at a time.

Booking extended-stay housing before peak summer demand hits (typically June through August) gives you better availability and more flexibility on move-in dates. Spring also tends to see fewer competing bookings from leisure travelers, meaning our properties are available across a wider range of dates and configurations.

SOPHARI TIP

If you're coordinating housing for a team of 3 or more arriving this spring, reach out early. Same-building availability for multiple units goes quickly in April and May. We can hold multiple apartments under a single agreement to simplify your logistics.

For Families: A Softer Landing

Spring is also ideal for families in the middle of a relocation. Children are still in school routines, which means a spring arrival gives families time to settle, explore neighborhoods, and make decisions about schools and permanent housing without the August crunch that everyone else faces.

Our larger properties — including our 7-bedroom West Seattle home, the 5-bedroom waterfront retreat at Dash Point, and our 8-bedroom SeaTac property that sleeps up to 20 — are well-suited for families who need real space: full kitchens, multiple living areas, outdoor space. Not a hotel corridor.

Mercer Island & Bellevue in Spring

If you haven't considered Mercer Island or downtown Bellevue as a base, spring is the season that makes the case most clearly. Mercer Island sits in the middle of Lake Washington, connected by bridge to both Seattle and Bellevue — walkable, quiet, exceptionally livable, with a downtown corridor that surprises most visitors with its quality of restaurants and green space.

Bellevue's downtown core, meanwhile, comes fully alive in spring. The Bellevue Botanical Garden reaches peak bloom in May. Restaurants open their patios. The Eastside's trail network — Burke-Gilman, Mercer Slough, Bellevue Creek — becomes genuinely pleasant rather than muddy.

What to Look for in a Spring Extended Stay

A few things matter more in spring than other seasons:

Outdoor access

Look for properties with balconies, patios, or proximity to parks. You'll use them. West Seattle and Dash Point properties have the edge here for guests who prioritize outdoor space.

Kitchen quality

Longer daylight and good weather means more cooking, more entertaining. All Sophari properties come fully equipped — not just a microwave and a mini fridge, but proper cookware, coffee setups, and counter space to use them.

Flexible dates

Spring projects and relocations rarely run on exact timelines. Look for housing that can flex a few days in either direction without penalties. We work with corporate clients on this regularly.
